Immigration Reform: ‘Now Is the Time’

The United States President Barack Obama finally says “Now Is the Time” for the Immigration Reform. The President at one of his meetings at Las Vegas on Tuesday talked about his idea and plan for immigration reform. Mr. President also mentioned that the ideas proposed were traditionally being supported by both the democrats as well as the republicans.

Mr.President Obama quoted:

This time, action must follow! We’ve been debating this a very long time.

This post covers Mr.President’s ideas for immigration reform which he proposed on this Tuesday. The ideas proposed by the president can basically be divided into four key principles, which he believes must be included in the commonsense immigration reform:

Streamlining Legal Immigration

The President proposes to provide visas (green cards) to those foreign graduate students in science and math, so that they could stay in the United States and continue to work without any legal issues, in spite of going to other countries. The president also adds to provide visas to the foreign entrepreneurs looking to start businesses at the United States. Mr. President wants the legal immigration to be simple and efficient and also adds saying that anyone who are willing to work hard and play by the rules must be rewarded.

Continuing to Strengthen Border Security

Mr. President Proposal gives the law enforcement the tools they need to use to make the communities safer and secure. The president mentions about strengthening the border security and also the President’s proposal continues to improve the ability to remove criminals and apprehend and prosecute national security threats.

Cracking Down on Employers Hiring Undocumented Workers

The President proposes to combat fraud and identity theft. He mentions there must be no businesses who would hire undocumented personnel and also that the employer’s must hire only those who can legally work in the United States. So, it is important to track down those employers hiring such workers the president says. Mr. President proposes to provide a mandatory tool, Electronic Employment Verification for employers. It is expected that this would help them verify the person’s identity and legal status before hiring.

Earned Citizenship

Mr. President talks about the 11 million undocumented immigrants, mentioning it is not practical enough to deport all those living within the United States borders. The president proposes to create a provisional legal status to all those candidates and his proposal continues to provide them a chance to earn their way to green cards and from there a legal way to earn citizenship. This proposal gives chance to those undocumented immigrants to come out of the shadows and pay taxes and also hold rules same as everyone else.

In the next few weeks, there would be collaborated discussions and debating sessions with the Republicans and Democrats on the Immigration plans. The broken immigration system in the United States needs to be fixed and it is definitely on its way.
